The Goal: Shifting Away from Tradition

A homeowner in Panama City Beach sought a space to relax and observe the landscape without the burden of constant maintenance. The project required a total removal of the existing deck, stairs, and foundation. While a standard rebuild provides a functional platform, the objective here focused on a specific aesthetic: creating a set of floating stairs that defied the look of traditional steps.

Constructing a deck with floating stairs requires a high level of patience and a detailed approach to framing. Technical choices on the site prioritized clean lines and long-term stability:

  • Foundation Strategy: Gulf Coast Decks avoids setting posts directly in concrete. Instead, our team sets every post on specialized post bases. This method requires exact measurements before any lumber is cut, as there is no room for adjustment once the structure is set.
  • The Floating Stair System: To move away from traditional stair construction, our team worked slowly through the details of the stringer and riser layout. This methodical pace resulted in a set of stairs that appear to hover, providing a sophisticated entrance to the main platform.
  • High-Performance Surface: Our team applied TimberTech Reserve in Antique Leather. This composite material provides the look of hand-scraped wood with a durable cap that resists the Florida sun and humidity.
  • Hidden Fastening: To maintain a clean surface, Camo Edge Clips were applied. This system secures the boards from the side, resulting in a fastener-free finish across the entire deck.
  • The Drink Rail Connection: We integrated a TimberTech composite post system topped with a matching drink rail. This provides a wide, flat surface along the perimeter for placing refreshments while looking out over the property.

When the final Antique Leather boards were secured, the Panama City Beach site was completely changed. Gulf Coast Decks resolved the problem of a high-maintenance yard by providing an aesthetically pleasing platform built for daily enjoyment.
